I received my B. F. A. from Bard College. The college encouraged abstract painting, which I embraced, resulting in a series of large hard-edged paintings. Despite that, the first paintings I sold, giant sandwiches on canvas, were bought by my boss at Lou’s Astro Submarine Shop in Kingston, NY.

After college I taught myself airbrush illustration and did freelance work in magazine and book publishing.

As I began the labor-intensive site work and landscaping on my 43-acre property, I felt a need to explore landscape painting.  I took plein air art classes and experimented first with oil pastel and then oil painting on small panels and canvas.

I traveled to the Appalachians, the Catskills, Sonoma County, Rangeley Lakes, and the Berkshires painting on location.

For some time I had wanted to paint at Marsden Hartley’s remote spot on Katahdin Lake, but could not think of bringing heavy oil painting gear.  I took a watercolor workshop called “Earth Air Fire and Water” taught by Don Nice. Don helped me so much with the painting, and was happy to share his knowledge and experience of getting to Katahdin Lake.

My first voyage to Baxter State Park was the Fall of 2004.  Although Hartley’s location at Katahdin Lake did not pan out for me artistically on that first trip, I continue to be inspired by other magnificent areas in Baxter which I investigate each autumn while backpacking and painting in the Park.
